The Women's Executive Roundtable

The Women's Executive Roundtable

Pssst… That “Great Big Leap” is Just a Bunch of Small Hops:

An Alternative Approach to Risk and Uncertainty

Attorney, real estate investor and self-described “risk-averse entrepreneur” Jennifer Walker offers her perspective on managing personal and career risk without losing yourself or your sanity.

  • Looking back on your life and career to date, are there times you wish you’d been a little braver, trusted in yourself more, or been less cautious in the chances you took (or didn’t take)?

  • Are you now at a crossroads, wondering if you should take a chance on new opportunity or move your life or career in a new direction?

  • Have you been putting off taking an action you know is necessary to propel your career or business to the next level?

  • Have you ever felt paralyzed and unsure of which path to take when facing a major life decision?

If you answered “yes” to any of the above, then it’s time to take a closer look at how you approach uncertainty and risk.

Sure, we all know that risk-taking is necessary for growth and to move us forward to bigger and better opportunities. But far too often, we find ourselves stuck when it’s time to take that Big Leap. Doubts and insecurities loom large, and the “What ifs” take over. What if I fail? What if it’s just not the right time? What if… What if… What if…

In our society, we’re often told that “fortune favors the bold” and the desire to avoid or minimize risk is a weakness holding us back from success. But in reality, our innate risk aversion serves a purpose – and if it’s harnessed properly, it can help us taker smarter and bolder action in the face of uncertainty.

In this Roundtable Discussion, Jen Walker will address the critical mistakes many of us make when assessing risk, using examples from her own life and career. Participants will learn to recognize the innate biases in our thinking that distort our perception of risk and uncertainty, and to identify their most significant obstacles when it comes to risk-taking.

The discussion will also address techniques that participants can use to become more comfortable with uncertainty and more confident about the risks they choose to take in their careers and personal lives.
